Pohl, K.P.; Hemmingsen, I.D.; Hutchinson, E.F. 1996 Short range digital radio link for instruments . Lower Hutt: Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences Institute of Geological & Nuclear Sciences science report 96/30 10 p.

Abstract: The availability of microprocessors has enabled an increasing level of data processing to be done within instruments. This has transformed the utility of instruments, and measurements are more likely to be presented in terms of meaningful units rather than as raw data. However, the logging of results and their higher level processing still require a cable link to a more powerful computer. This cable link can present an impediment in positioning the instrument, particularly if it is attached to a machine, or is used in tight or hazardous conditions. The work reported here describes the development of a short range radio link designed to replace the cable for the transmission of digital data. The requirements were for small size, light weight, and very low power battery operation. In addition to a design of electronics to be incorporated into an instrument, plug-in modules for rf simplex serial data links between PCs are described. These are transparent to the PCs, and are compatible with standard communication software. (auth)
