Hull, A.G. 1978 Bench mark stability report, Castlepoint-New Plymouth. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. New Zealand Geological Survey report EDS 49 33 p.
Abstract: In compliance with the Royal Society Report on earth deformation studies, this survey of the stability and suitability of bench marks between Castlepoint and New Plymouth was carried out, in conjunction with Lands and Survey personnel, between 24th and 28th July 1978. Each bench mark has been examined for - (a) its stability in relation to its foundation and surrounding deposits (b) its location suitability for determining earth deformation. Each bench mark has been graded on its stability in the material in which it has been bedded. The grading also takes into account broader geological factors which also affect stability. All bench marks graded as unstable are commented on at the end of each section. The suitability for earth deformation studies of several bench marks is also examined. Locations for new and / or additional bench marks, not already given to the Chief Surveyor of the Wellington and Taranaki Land Districts, is also recommended. Several general conclusions concerning the siting of bench marks have become apparent. The following sections outline the major problems encountered and the rationale behind the grading of many of the bench marks (auth)
