Hull, A.G. 1978 Bench mark stability report, Tongariro circuit. Lower Hutt: New Zealand Geological Survey. New Zealand Geological Survey report EDS 50 20 p.
Abstract: The report of the Royal Society on Earth Deformation Studies recommended that precise levelling be undertaken in tectonically active areas of New Zealand. It has also been recommended that all bench marks on EDS precise levelling routes be inspected for their local foundation stability and suitability for earth deformation studies. This report is the result of the inspection of bench marks on the Tongariro Circuit, carried out in conjunction with the Lands and Survey Department between 12th and 14 September 1978. Each bench mark has been examined and the stability of the foundation materials assessed subjectively and graded according to the following scheme: A = stable; B = probably stable, only to be observed under identical climatic and water table conditions; C = potentially unstable; D = unstable. The grade given to each bench mark is partly dependent upon the information available about the foundation materials.
