Abstract: This pattern with the exception of BM1 and BM2 was installed and first surveyed in January-February 1972. A resurvey was carried out a year later and again in January 1977. Before the 1977 survey two extra bench marks, BM1 and BM2 were installed. The pattern straddles the Alpine Fault which follows the western side of the Southern Alps, and forms part of a developing network set up to monitor vertical and horizontal secular deformation throughout New Zealand's active belt.
