Abstract: Planning has been initiated for a second thermal power station in the lower Waikato Region. The area considered is bounded to the east by the Hauraki Plains, and lies between North Waikato Head and Raglan Harbour. The geology of the region is discussed in broad terms, together with the geological and geotechnical problems of the area. Five specific areas are discussed, each representing a possible site for one of five cooling options. Five broad units can be recognised within the area. The oldest unit comprises the basement rock of indurated sandstone, mudstone, conglomerate, and wacke type rocks, and will be referred to as ''basement rocks''. Each of the other four groups are recognised within the basement rock.
