Abstract: The Rotowaro Coalfield lies 8 km west of Huntly. It adjoins the south- western and western boundary of the Huntly Coalfield and the northern boundary of the Glen Massey Coalfield. ... Three main coal seams are present: the Taupiri, Kupakupa, and Renown seams of which Kupakupa is the most important. Generally the Renown Seam is thin or absent, and only locally of workable thickness. The Taupiri Seam is important only in Callaghans Sector. Total coal in the ground at end-1975 was approximately 48 million tonnes, of which 13 million tonnes should be suitable for opencast mining. ... Dips on the whole are gentle. The regional north and north-west dip, however, is masked by local steepenings due to irregularities in pre-coal-measure topography, to uneven compaction, or to the proximity of large faults.
