Gunnell SN. 2019. Translating natural hazard science into policy and practice: 'It's Our Fault' course summary and recommendations report. Lower Hutt (NZ): GNS Science. 83 p. (GNS Science miscellaneous series; 128). doi:10.21420/MGJY-HV52.
Abstract:
Effective natural hazard planning policy and practice for managing the risk faced by our communities needs to be informed by science. While scientific information on the natural hazards New Zealand is exposed to continues to increase, this information often struggles to be translated into planning policy and practice. In particular, the ‘It’s Our Fault’ (IOF) research programme that began in 2006 has generated a significant amount of scientific information on the likelihood and consequences of a large magnitude earthquake event in the Wellington region. In order to promote the wider dissemination of this information and enhance the capability of planning practitioners in the Wellington region for managing natural hazards, a two-day course was held in 2019 with the purpose of demonstrating how the IOF seismic hazard science could be translated into planning policy and practice. This report summarises the key information that was presented at the course along with an evaluation of the course based on participant feedback. Recommendations are made to support the future development of a such a course in other regions of New Zealand. (auth)
