Abstract: Temperature and chemical concentration records from Crater Lake, Ruapehu were compared with the record of Ruapehu eruptions since early 1966. Various techniques of pattern recognition were tried, to see if eruption precursors could be defined. The most successful was the delineation of two states, one of high power input to Crater Lake, and another of low temperature and low power input. If the Crater Lake was in either of these states, there was a high risk of eruption. Six of the eight significant eruptions gave prior warning using this method
