Abstract: Geophysical and geochemical surveys are important techniques in mineral exploration. Overseas practice has demonstrated that government funded regional surveys provide a database that encourages private-company investment in mineral exploration. We have identified and prioritised seven regions of New Zealand that are prospective for mineral deposits, are accessible for mineral exploration and are suitable for the proposed surveys. Provisional priorities ranked in order of importance are Otago, Taupo Volcanic Zone, Northland, southern Coromandel, West Coast, Marlborough and Southland. The seven proposed surveys cover less than 30% of the land area of New Zealand, and it would be desirable for all seven to be included in a staged programme. (auth)
